The light shell limestone soils balance the acidity of the wine, store water and at the same time promote the minerality enormously. The aromas of these wines are often reminiscent of soft yellow fruits with a touch of exoticism such as mango or pineapple as well as ripe yellow apples. Common to all are the buffered acidity and the intense minerality, which is sometimes already hinted at in the fragrance. In Spielberg, the vineyards are exposed to the wind, so the grapes dry quickly after rain and remain healthy even when ripe. The Dürkheimer limestone reef, to which the Spielberg belongs, is a testimony of the last large seas in the Palatinate about 30 million years ago. At that time the sea level was a good 300 metres higher than today and the Palatinate Forest was a shore zone with mussel banks settling in it and the resulting limestone reefs. The sea was connected with the northern seas and via the Rhone valley with the southern seas
